the words to the song...

oh look, i know you're going to ask, so i decided to just put up the words to the song and get it over with. and i had them already, anyway, because i used them as a 'watermark' background for our flyer.

It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)

(from sheet music corrected by Michael Stipe)

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane and Lenny Bruce is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn - world serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs. Feed it off an aux speak, grunt, no, strength, Ladder start to clatter with fear fight down height. Wire in a fire, representing seven games, a government for hire and a combat site. Left of west and coming in a hurry with the furies breathing down your neck. Team by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped. Look at that low playing! Fine, then. Uh oh, overflow, population, common food, but it'll do. Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed dummy with the rapture and the revered and the right, right. You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty psyched.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign towers. Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn. Locking in, uniforming, book burning, blood letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate. Light a candle, light a votive. Step down, step down. Watch your heel crush, crushed, uh-oh, this means no fear cavalier. Renegade steer clear! A tournament, tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

The other night I dreamt of knives, continental drift divide. Mountains sit in a line, Leonard Bernstein. Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs. Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom! You symbiotic, patriotic, slam book neck, right? Right.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine...fine...

(It's time I had some time alone)

what's up with this end of the world stuff, anyway?

so, you ask, why the end of the world?

well, i have always liked end of the world stuff. books, stories, movies, anything that had that 'it's the end of all it is, and was, and let's try to make it' theme. even if it didn't have a happy ending, it was okay with me. On The Beach, The Sheep Look Up, The Postman, Miracle Mile, Inconstant Moon, Omega Man. loved them all.

and i've always been intrigued with the fifties-era paranoia/propaganda, with the bomb shelters and the us against them attitude; the hope that yes, if you listened to your civil defense warden in his tin helmet and used blackout curtains and memorized the training films they showed in school, then yes indeed, after the bombs fell, as long as you washed off your food before you ate it, you could survive.

a post-apocalyptic paradise.

but anyway. with the year being 1999 and all, i felt we could have some fun with this theme. deck the concom out in civil defense arm bands, put a radiation symbol on anything that moved, hand out 'emergency' rations, use that nice song REM seemed to have written for the ocassion. i've already had people come up to me with ideas for panels, good ideas, like what happens to all our technology that's useless once the end of the world really comes? and what's your favorite way for it all to end? and a suggestion that we do a web site, and let people who visit it leave their end of the world predictions.

it's a theme that we can all have fun with -- even if the world doesn't end on schedule.
