Lynn Gold: Fan Guest of Honor
Lynn Gold has been active in fandom for years, in committee positions ranging from Chair and Webmistress of a Consonance filk convention, programming for Consonance, Con Suite for a Westercon, and helping with Worldcon bids -- sometimes helping with more than one at a time.
She came to my place to bake brownies (with and without oregano) for the ConFrancisco bid and cheesecake for the Philidelphia bid parties at L.A.con III, the World Science Fiction Convention in 1996. (Both bids won: The Millennium Philcon is this year, and the ConFrancisco bid mutated to ConJose, the 2002 Worldcon in San Jose.)
Parties she helps host generally have hot food, frequently home-made. The parties are of the talking and munching variety, the getting-to-know-one-another variety, not the loud music and dancing variety.
Lynn's Bichon Frise dog, "Fuzzball," sometimes accompanies her to conventions. He can usually be found checking out the snacks and looking for friends in room parties. Once when Fuzzball got out of their room, he searched the hotel until he found Lynn performing a concert.
Lynn's usually humorous filk songs are on a wide range of topics. "California Love Song" makes fun of some of the Northern California stereotypes, "Gonna Buy Me a Whale" is about pet ownership, and "The Road Kill Cafe" is about, well, the obvious. She was Filk Guest of Honor at Leprecon in 1999 and Interfilk guest at CounterPoint Three.
"Net.Fogey extraordinaire," as Lynn is sometimes known, was on Arpanet before the (usenet) great renaming, when the host table of 800 or so computers on the net was distributed nightly via FTP.
My earliest clear memory of her is when we both helped with the @! Party at Westercon 44 in Vancouver -- back when being on "the net" was something unusual.
